RED SOX AND Y*NKEES ONCE AGAIN LCS COMBATANTS
So what is different this year? Pitching. We have improved ours with the acquisition of Schilling and the way Arroyo is pitching. We have also improved our bullpen with the addition of closer Keith Foulke who got some huge outs against Anaheim. Meanwhile, the Y*nkees pitching is not what it was last year. There is no Andy Pettitte, a pitcher who dominated us. cl*mens, who all of a sudden has become a big game pitcher in the eyes of ESPN, is gone. Quite frankly, I am not intimidated by Kevin Brown, Mike Mussina, and whoever else the Y*nkees throw at us. We also swept Anaheim and all our pitchers will be fresh. I'm not predicting a Red Sox victory, but we have a chance. We just have to perform and stay sharp.

PITCHING MATCHUPS
Game 1: Curt Schilling vs. Mike Mussina
Is there any pitcher in baseball you would rather have starting the most important game of the season thus far? Schilling had two wins this year against New York (one against Mussina). Mussina had a win and a loss against us. Mussina was an unimpressive 12-9 in the regular season. Schilling was 21-6. Mussina's ERA was 4.59, Schilling's was 3.26. Mussina is 6-6 on the postseason with an ERA of 3.06, Schilling is 5-2 in the playoffs with an ERA of 1.74. Schilling is obviously the best pitcher but this does not mean we are a guarantee to win. Mussina has come up with huge starts against us and God only knows what is up with Schilling's ankle which has been bothering him since early in the season.

More matchups to come as the pitching is released. The teams go to Y*nkee Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday night. Then the series moves for Fenway for up to three games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If the series is still undecided, the teams will return to the Stadium next Tuesday and Wednesday.
